Description of Most Common Jobs


Ranger/Wildland Firefighter
Please note: Newly hired rangers are expected to complete initial wildland firefighting training within the first 90 days of employment. During this initial training, the ranger must have obtained the appropriate CDL and completed the Moderate Field Test (also known as the Work Capacity Test, or WCT). The WCT consists of a two-mile walk wearing a 25 pound weighted vest. This walk must be completed in 30 minutes or less, at a brisk walking pace (no running or jogging allowed). Failure to meet these requirements by the end of the initial 90 days may result in termination of employment.

Examples of duties: Operate two to five ton trucks and medium to heavy crawler tractors in the suppression of wildfires; prepare reports, including measuring and computing acreage; assist landowners in control burns and plow pre-suppression breaks; perform preventative maintenance and small repairs to fire suppression equipment


Forester
Please note: Newly hired foresters are expected to complete initial forester training during the first 90 days of employment. This training includes completing the Moderate Field Test (also known as the Work Capacity Test, or WCT). The WCT consists of a two-mile walk wearing a 25 pound weighted vest. This walk must be completed in 30 minutes or less, at a brisk walking pace (no running or jogging allowed). Failure to meet these requirements by the end of the initial 90 days may result in termination of employment.

Examples of duties: Provide technical assistance to landowners in all areas of forest management; write multiple resource-based forest management plans for landowners; assist with timber sales on state lands; provide technical assistance to landowners in afforestation and reforestation; diagnose insect and disease infestations and make recommendations for control; assess storm damage to forest lands; develop prescribed burning plans and assist with implementation; provide assistance with establishing Streamside Management Zones; present forestry programs to school groups and local government bodies; assist landowners with cost share programs.
