Comments In 1872, J. Sterling Morton proposed to the Nebraska Board of Agriculture that a special day be set aside for the planting of trees. This holiday, called Arbor Day, was first observed with the planting of more than a million trees in Nebraska. Arbor Day is now observed throughout the nation and world.

Arbor Day is celebrated in Georgia on the third Friday of February. Although National Arbor Day is in April, each state typically celebrates Arbor Day during their regional planting season. So, one of the best ways to celebrate Arbor Day is to plant a tree!

The Madison Greenspace Commission has celebrated Arbor Day over the years with different activities, including seedling sales and give-a-ways, poster contests, and educational articles. If you have an idea or would like to partner with the GSC, please contact us.

The City of Madison Mayor and City Council will proclaim February 16, 2018 as Arbor Day at their regular meeting, Monday, February 12, 2018.
